When an older person loses the use of their legs, after a spinal injury, a bad fall or a complicated operation, the family's world changes overnight. Lifting, turning, bathing and toileting become two-person jobs, pressure sores become a constant worry, and most Mumbai flats are simply not built for a wheelchair. Assisted living in Sector 9A, Vashi, is worth knowing about for exactly this situation, because the home here is run by a foundation that specialises in paraplegia.
Vashi helps too. It is the oldest and most central node of Navi Mumbai, a short drive over the Vashi bridge from Chembur and Sion, with the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines meeting at Vashi station.
Sharan Home for Senior Citizens
Sharan Home for Senior Citizens is run by the Sharan Paraplegic Foundation, and many families know it simply as the Sharan old age home in Navi Mumbai. It combines everyday assisted living with a specialism very few senior homes in the region offer.
Spinal cord injury and paraplegic rehabilitation. The home lists specialised rehabilitation for paraplegia and spinal cord injury. For an older resident, the goals are usually practical: safe transfers between bed, wheelchair and toilet, keeping skin healthy, managing bladder and bowel care with dignity, and staying as active as the body allows.
Medical oversight. Doctors visit, and residents have regular medical check-ups, which helps catch infections and pressure areas early.
Daily care. Staff help with personal hygiene, meals are balanced and planned for nutrition, and emergency assistance is available. Emotional and social support is part of the service, which matters for someone adjusting to life in a wheelchair.
Rooms are furnished, with garden space, Wi-Fi and power backup. Because the needs of a person with paraplegia are so individual, discuss the details before admission: how many staff handle each transfer, what equipment the home provides, such as hoists, air mattresses and commode chairs, and how much physiotherapy is included.
Questions to settle before admission
- Who decides the therapy plan? Ask whether a physiotherapist assesses your parent on arrival and how often the plan is reviewed.
- How is skin protected? Turning schedules, air mattresses and daily skin checks prevent pressure sores, the most common complication for a person who sits or lies for long hours.
- What happens with an infection? Urinary infections are common with limited mobility. Ask how quickly the doctor sees a resident with fever and which hospital they go to if needed.
- How does the family stay involved? Ask about visiting hours, video calls and whether a relative can learn transfer techniques for home visits.
Wheelchair-friendly living in Vashi
- Hospitals. Fortis Hiranandani Hospital and the NMMC general hospital are in Vashi, and MGM's Vashi hospital is nearby. D.Y. Patil Hospital in Nerul is a short drive south.
- Flat, open spaces. Vashi's sector gardens and the Mini Seashore promenade along the creek are flat and wide, which makes an outing in a wheelchair possible on a dry evening.
- Easy for visitors. Trains on both lines stop at Vashi, and the bridge links straight to the Eastern Express Highway and central Mumbai.
What assisted living with rehabilitation costs in Vashi
Vashi sits at the upper end of Navi Mumbai's price band because of its central location. As a guide, general assisted living here costs about ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 a month, and rehabilitation, bedridden or high-dependency care about ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 a month. Equipment hire, extra therapy, catheter and dressing supplies and medicines are often charged separately. Confirm the current fee and what is included with the home.
