Cities with the most senior living homes
- Chennai, 89 homes. India's deepest senior living market, with retirement communities along the OMR and ECR, assisted living in Velachery, Kolathur and Porur, and dedicated dementia care.
- Coimbatore, 74 homes. Mild weather, good hospitals and large retirement communities around Thudiyalur, Vadavalli and Kovaipudur make it a favourite for retirees from across Tamil Nadu and abroad.
- Pune, 55 homes. Senior living in Baner, Kothrud, Bavdhan and Hinjawadi, with assisted living across the city, close to the Mumbai Pune corridor.
- Bengaluru, 49 homes. Everything from luxury retirement communities in the north and on Kanakapura Road to assisted living in Whitefield and HSR Layout.
- Hyderabad, 31 homes. Assisted living in Miyapur, Gachibowli and Nagole, plus communities on the city's edges.

Senior living by region
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Beyond Chennai and Coimbatore, families look at Pollachi, Mahabalipuram, Kancheepuram, Hosur, Madurai and Puducherry.
Kerala. Kerala has one of the oldest populations in India and a strong tradition of retirement homes. Start with Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Palakkad and Thrissur.
Karnataka. Outside Bengaluru, Mysuru is a quiet, affordable choice, and there are homes in Udupi, Belagavi and near Nandi Hills in Chikkaballapur.
Maharashtra and Goa. Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai and Thane lead, with more options in Nashik, Nagpur, Lonavla and across Goa, where retirement living is growing in Bardez and Salcete.

Types of senior living you will find in each city
- Independent living. Retirement communities and senior citizen apartments for active seniors, with meals, housekeeping, security and on-call medical help. About half the homes Elkin lists are independent living.
- Assisted living. Homes with caregivers and nurses for help with bathing, dressing, mobility and medicines. This is what most families mean when they search for an old age home with care.
- Memory care. Secure homes with staff trained in dementia and Alzheimer's care. These are still rare in India and found mainly in the big cities.
- Home care. If a parent would rather stay at home, Elkin also lists home care providers for nurses, caregivers and physiotherapy at home.
What senior living costs from city to city
Costs depend more on the level of care than on the city, but location still moves the price. As a rough guide, a basic paid old age home costs about ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 a month, independent living about ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 a month, assisted living about ₹30,000 to ₹70,000 a month and memory care about ₹75,000 to ₹1,50,000 or more. Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru sit at the top of each band, and smaller towns such as Pollachi, Mysuru or Palakkad at the bottom.
