Senior living homes in Nagpur: what families should know
Nagpur sits at the geographic centre of India, and for families across Vidarbha it is the obvious place to look for senior living. The Orange City has AIIMS Nagpur, the Government Medical College and a long row of private hospitals, a metro that now reaches most of the central neighbourhoods, and a slower, greener pace than Mumbai or Pune. Many parents want to stay here even after their children move away.
The choice of purpose-built senior living in Nagpur is still small. Elkin lists two verified homes in and around the city, and they could hardly be more different: a cluster of furnished studio apartments in Sitabuldi, right in the centre, and a ten-acre township of independent cottages beside Zilpi lake, outside the city off Hingna Road. Around them, Nagpur has several long-running trust-run old age homes. This page explains how they compare, what each costs and how to choose.
Types of senior living homes in Nagpur
Independent living in Nagpur is the main form you will find. It suits seniors who can manage their own day but want meals, housekeeping, security and company taken care of. Both homes Elkin lists in Nagpur are classed as independent living, though one adds nursing on site. See independent living homes in Nagpur →
Assisted living and nursing support. Seniors who need help with bathing, medicines or walking will find that the city-centre studio home keeps a medical room with nurse attendance and attendants round the clock. Dedicated memory care and dementia units are rare in Nagpur, so for a parent with advanced dementia, ask each home directly what it can manage and at what stage it would ask for a move to hospital or a specialist centre.
Renting, not buying. Unlike Pune or Nashik, Nagpur does not yet have senior housing that you buy outright. Both listed homes work on a monthly or rental basis, which keeps you flexible if care needs change. Maitraban, the township near Zilpi lake, states plainly that its cottages are not for sale.
Old age homes and senior living homes in Nagpur: the difference
Most people begin by searching for an old age home in Nagpur, and the city has a long tradition of them. Matru Sewa Sangh's Panchawati Vruddhashram on Umred Road in Dighori has looked after seniors since 1961, with separate quarters for men and women, and Shanti Bhavan on Katol Road takes in destitute and dying elders. Homes like these offer shared or simple rooms, vegetarian meals and basic care at a low cost, and many have waiting lists.
Senior living homes in Nagpur are built for a different stay. Residents get a private furnished room or a cottage of their own, planned meals, housekeeping, activities and medical support on call. Maitraban was designed from the start to avoid feeling like a conventional vruddhashram: residents are called residents, not inmates. Elkin can help you compare a trust-run old age home with a private senior living home before you decide.
Best areas for senior living in Nagpur
Central Nagpur: Sitabuldi and North Ambazari Road. This is the most convenient address in the city for a senior. Soham-Senior Living Home, run by Soham Senior Care, sits on North Ambazari Road in Sitabuldi and offers furnished studio and double rooms with nursing care, a medical room and trained attendants round the clock. Wockhardt Super Speciality Hospital is on the same road at Shankar Nagar Square, and the Aqua Line of the metro runs along the corridor. Dharampeth, Ramdaspeth and Shankar Nagar are next door. West, towards Hingna and Zilpi lake. Maitraban Senior Citizen Township, run by Gandhe Jeewanchhaya Sanstha since 2003, has single and double cottages, each with its own small compound, on a landscaped campus about 25 km from the city near Zilpi lake. Its city office is on North Ambazari Road. It suits active, independent seniors who want fresh air and quiet, and families comfortable with a longer drive for visits.
South and east: Wardha Road, Manish Nagar, Umred Road. These fast-growing parts of the city are closest to AIIMS Nagpur at MIHAN and to the trust-run homes on Umred Road. Families living in Besa, Manish Nagar or Dighori often look here first.
Senior living and old age home costs in Nagpur
Fees in Nagpur depend on the room, the level of care and whether the home is trust-run or private. These ranges are approximate and are meant as a starting point. Always confirm the current fee, and what it covers, with the home itself.
- Free and charitable old age homes in Nagpur: free to about ₹6,000 a month, mostly trust-run homes with shared rooms. Places are limited.
- Paid old age homes: about ₹8,000 to ₹18,000 a month for a shared or simple private room with meals and basic care.
- Independent living in Nagpur: about ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 a month for a furnished room or cottage with meals, housekeeping and doctor visits. Central addresses with nursing on site sit at the upper end.
- Assisted living with nursing support: about ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 a month.
- Bedridden, post-stroke or dementia care: about ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 a month, more with a one-to-one attendant.
Extras usually include medicines, physiotherapy sessions, diapers and other consumables, and a private attendant. Many homes ask for a refundable deposit at admission; our guide on whether an old age home deposit is refundable explains what to check. What life looks like in a Nagpur senior living home
The heat is the first thing to plan for. Nagpur summers regularly go past 45°C in May, so check that rooms are cooled, that the power backup runs the coolers or air-conditioning, and that there is shade for an evening walk.
Food is usually home-style Maharashtrian and Varhadi cooking: poha in the morning, dal, bhaji and chapati at lunch, and lighter meals at night. Ask whether the kitchen avoids the fiery saoji style for residents with weak digestion, and whether diabetic and low-salt diets are routine. Staff mostly speak Marathi and Hindi. Expect three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, security, Wi-Fi and a doctor who visits on a schedule; Maitraban, for example, brings in a doctor weekly and delivers meals to cottages for residents who cannot reach the dining hall.
How to choose the right senior living home in Nagpur
There is no single best old age home in Nagpur for every family. These checks help narrow the list.
- Decide on centre or outskirts first. A Sitabuldi home puts a hospital minutes away; a cottage near Zilpi lake trades that for space and calm.
- Time the drive to hospital. From an outskirts campus, ask which hospital the home uses in an emergency, who drives, and how long it takes at night.
- Check the summer set-up. Visit in April or May if you can, and look at the cooling in rooms and common areas.
- Ask about nursing, not just doctors. Independent living homes vary a lot: one may have nurse attendance on site, another a weekly doctor's visit. Match this to your parent's needs today and in two years. Our guide to independent living versus assisted living helps.
- Ask about bedridden residents. Some Nagpur homes, including several trust homes, do not admit bedridden seniors. Know the home's rule before a crisis.
- Read the exit terms. Know the notice period and what happens to the deposit if your parent leaves.
