Senior living homes in Ahmedabad: what families should know
Ahmedabad has quietly become one of the better cities in western India to find a senior living home. The city has some of Gujarat's strongest hospitals, a long tradition of trust-run homes for elders, and a newer wave of purpose-built retirement communities along the SG Highway and on the edges of the city. Whether you are searching for senior living in Ahmedabad or for a good old age home in Ahmedabad for a parent, you will find everything here: charitable senior citizen homes, retirement homes and villas, assisted living with nursing care and a dedicated dementia care centre.
Elkin lists 15 verified senior living homes in Ahmedabad. Every home on this page has been checked for registration, care staff, safety and honest pricing, and our team can take you on a guided visit to any of them. Elkin is also a primary member of the Association of Senior Living India (ASLI), the body that sets standards for senior living communities across the country.
Types of senior living homes in Ahmedabad
Senior living homes in Ahmedabad come in four main forms, and the homes on this page cover all of them.
Independent living in Ahmedabad suits seniors who are healthy and want their own space with the daily work taken off their hands: meals, housekeeping, security and the company of people their own age. Most of the city's independent living sits in the west, around Thaltej, Bodakdev and the Shantigram township near Vaishnodevi Circle, with larger retirement townships on the southwest edge near Bavla. Assisted living in Ahmedabad is for seniors who need daily help with bathing, dressing, medicines or moving around, or who are recovering after a hospital stay. Several homes in Ahmedabad are run by geriatric care and nursing teams rather than property developers, including a geriatric care centre with its own hospital in South Bopal, so medical support is closer at hand than many families expect. Memory care in Ahmedabad is for people living with dementia or Alzheimer's. The city has a dedicated dementia care centre in Ognaj, with secure spaces and staff trained in dementia care, and some assisted living homes also accept residents in the early stages. See memory care homes in Ahmedabad →
Renting or buying. Ahmedabad is unusual in how many senior living homes you can buy into. Retirement townships near Bavla, a senior living development in Thaltej and the Adani project at Shantigram all sell homes outright, while care-focused homes work on a monthly fee. The Shantigram project is still under construction, so check the possession date before you commit. If care needs are likely to change soon, a monthly arrangement is usually the safer place to start.
Old age homes and senior living homes in Ahmedabad: the difference
Most families in Ahmedabad start by searching for an old age home, and the city has many of them. Traditional old age homes here are usually run by charitable trusts and community samajs, offer shared rooms and simple vegetarian meals, and charge little or nothing. Long-running trust homes such as Jeevan Sandhya in Naranpura are well known across the city.
Senior living homes in Ahmedabad are newer and built for a different stay. Residents get a private room or their own apartment, planned meals, housekeeping, activities and, where needed, trained caregivers and nursing care. Some are luxury retirement communities with clubhouses and villas; others are care homes focused on elderly care after illness. Elkin lists both kinds on this page, so you can compare a trust-run old age home and a private senior living community side by side.
Best areas for senior living in Ahmedabad
Senior living homes in Ahmedabad cluster in five parts of the city, and each one suits a different kind of family.
SG Highway and the west (Thaltej, Bodakdev, Ognaj, Shantigram). The most choice in one stretch, and the closest to the city's big private hospitals, including Zydus, Marengo CIMS, SAL and Sterling. Here you will find La Habitat in Thaltej, Shanti Senior Citizen Services in Bodakdev, Jagruti Dementia Care Centre in Ognaj, Swarg Community Care near Vaishnodevi Circle for residents who need long-term or bedside care, and Ikaria by Adani Realty at Shantigram. Nearby Satellite, Vastrapur, Prahlad Nagar and Ghatlodia are all within a short drive. It suits NRI families who want a parent in a well-connected, well-served part of the city.
Bopal and South Bopal. Quieter residential neighbourhoods on the western edge, along with Ambli, popular with families who already live in the newer western suburbs and want a parent close by. Shubh Aarogyam Geriatric Care Center and Hospital in South Bopal makes this a good choice when medical needs are higher.
North Ahmedabad and Adalaj (Jagatpur, Chandkheda, Adalaj). Greener and more spread out, towards Gandhinagar. PapayaCare Assisted Living inside Godrej Garden City and Shantiniketan Senior Living, a community at Adalaj that has run since 2012, are both here, and Apollo Hospitals near Bhat is within reach.
East and south Ahmedabad (Jashodanagar, Lambha). Older, more affordable parts of the city, where trust-run homes such as Manilal Gandhi Van Prastha in Jashodanagar and Jivandhara in Lambha offer simpler independent living at a lower cost, usually with vegetarian Gujarati meals. Large hospitals in the eastern half of the city, including the Civil Hospital at Asarwa, are the nearest big centres. Families in Maninagar and Vatva usually find these homes the closest.
Central Ahmedabad (Navrangpura, Naranpura, Paldi, Chandranagar). The older central neighbourhoods have smaller, long-running old age homes, many run by trusts and community groups, but very few purpose-built senior living homes. If your family lives here, the homes in Bodakdev, Thaltej and Ognaj are usually the closest options with private rooms and nursing support.
Bavla and the outskirts. On the southwest edge of the city, Prarambh Retirement Township near Bavla offers villas to buy, with community dining and care on site. It suits active seniors who want space and a slower pace, and families who are comfortable with a longer drive for visits.
Senior living and old age home costs in Ahmedabad
Costs in Ahmedabad vary from home to home, and they depend on three things: the area, the type of room and how much care your parent needs. The ranges below are approximate and give you a starting point. Always confirm the current fee, and what it includes, with the home before you decide.
- Free and low-cost old age homes in Ahmedabad: free to about ₹10,000 a month. These are mostly trust-run homes in central, east and south Ahmedabad, such as Naranpura, Maninagar, Jashodanagar and Lambha, with shared rooms and simple vegetarian meals.
- Independent senior living, paid monthly: about ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 a month, depending on the room. Homes in the west, around Bodakdev, Thaltej and Satellite, sit at the higher end.
- Assisted living in Ahmedabad: about ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 a month in Bopal, South Bopal, Ognaj and the SG Highway belt, and a little less in north Ahmedabad around Godrej Garden City and Adalaj.
- Dementia care and bedridden care: about ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 a month, since residents need trained staff round the clock. Most of these homes are in Ognaj and the western suburbs.
- Buying into a senior living community: about ₹40 lakh to ₹60 lakh for a villa in the retirement townships near Bavla, and about ₹80 lakh to well over ₹1 crore for luxury senior living along the SG Highway, in Thaltej and at Shantigram, plus a monthly maintenance fee.
On top of the monthly fee, expect to pay extra for a one-to-one attendant, physiotherapy, medicines and medical consumables. Many homes also take a refundable security deposit at admission. What you usually get in a senior living home in Ahmedabad
Food is the first thing most Ahmedabad families ask about, and the answer is usually reassuring. Most senior living homes in the city serve vegetarian Gujarati meals, and many will cook Jain food without onion, garlic or root vegetables on request. Diabetic and low-salt diets are standard. If your parent eats non-vegetarian food, ask before you visit, because many kitchens in Ahmedabad are pure vegetarian.
The heat comes second. Ahmedabad summers regularly cross 40°C, so check that rooms and common areas are air-conditioned, that the power backup covers the air-conditioning and not just the lights, and that there is shaded outdoor space for an evening walk.
Beyond food and the heat, expect three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, 24-hour security, power backup and Wi-Fi. On the elderly care side, most homes offer daily health checks, medicine reminders, emergency response, a visiting doctor and an ambulance tie-up with a nearby hospital. Assisted living and memory care homes add trained caregivers on every shift, wheelchair-friendly buildings and support after a hospital stay. Caregivers in Ahmedabad usually speak Gujarati and Hindi, which matters more than families expect when a parent is unwell or confused.
How to choose the right senior living home in Ahmedabad
There is no single best old age home in Ahmedabad or best senior living home for everyone. The right one depends on your parent's health, budget and where the family lives. These checks help you narrow the list.
- Decide between buying and paying monthly first. Ahmedabad has more senior homes for sale than most Indian cities. Buying suits a long, independent stay, while a monthly fee keeps you flexible if care needs might rise.
- Check the possession date on new projects. Some senior living developments in Ahmedabad are still being built. Ask for the Gujarat RERA registration and the promised handover date before you pay anything.
- Time the drive to hospital. From most homes in the west, Zydus, Marengo CIMS and SAL are a short drive. In Bavla or Lambha, ask exactly which hospital the ambulance goes to and how long it takes at night.
- Visit in the afternoon. A summer afternoon shows you how well the home handles the heat, which a morning visit will not.
- Eat a meal there. Taste the dal and rotli, and ask how the kitchen manages Jain, diabetic and soft diets.
- Ask about staff at night, and whether a nurse is on site or only on call.
- Read the deposit and exit rules. Know what comes back if your parent leaves and how much notice each side must give. Our guide on whether an old age home deposit is refundable covers what to check.
