Senior living in Mumbai: what families should know

Finding senior living homes in Mumbai is harder than in most Indian cities, and the reason is space. Flats are small, families are spread across the suburbs, and a parent who needs help with bathing, medicines or walking often cannot get it at home once both children are at work. At the same time, care in Mumbai costs more than anywhere else in India, because rent and staff wages are higher. Most families end up comparing homes across a wide area: the western suburbs around Juhu and Andheri, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and quieter retreat-style homes in Raigad and Palghar.

Elkin lists 26 verified homes across this region, from small dementia care centres in Versova and D.N. Nagar to trust-run homes in the hills near Khopoli and a purpose-built senior community in Thane. Our advisors know which homes take bedridden residents, which ones focus on dementia and which suit an active parent who simply wants company and safety. We arrange guided visits and help you compare before you commit.

Old age homes and senior living homes in Mumbai: the difference

Most searches start with "old age home in Mumbai", and the term covers very different places. Traditional old age homes in Mumbai are usually run by trusts, community groups or religious bodies. They provide a bed, meals and company, often at low or no cost, with long waiting lists and limited medical support. Some serve a particular community, such as Jain, Catholic or Muslim families, and many ask for a one-time deposit.

Senior living homes are newer and are usually run by care companies or professional trusts. They focus on daily care rather than just shelter, with nurses on duty, physiotherapy, dementia programmes and tie-ups with nearby hospitals. They cost more, but they suit a parent who needs help every day. Paid old age homes with medical facilities sit between the two. Our guide on assisted living vs old age homes explains the trade-offs in more detail.

Best areas for senior living in Mumbai

Juhu, Vile Parle and Andheri West. The western suburbs have the densest cluster of care homes in the city, close to some of Mumbai's best hospitals: Nanavati Max on SV Road, Cooper Hospital and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at Four Bungalows. BHN Senior Living Juhu and BHN Senior Living Vile Parle offer bedside assistants, physiotherapy and an in-house dietician. Read more on senior living in Juhu, senior living in Vile Parle West and senior living in Andheri West.

Versova and D.N. Nagar. These neighbouring pockets of Andheri West sit on the Versova to Ghatkopar metro line, which makes family visits easier. Both have Aaji Care centres with palliative care and post-hospital recovery. See senior living in Versova and senior living in D.N. Nagar.

Navi Mumbai. Planned nodes such as Nerul, Vashi, Airoli and CBD Belapur offer wider roads, more greenery and lower costs than the island city. Homes here include Sharan Home for Senior Citizens in Vashi, Divine Care Vrudha Aashraya in Airoli, Silent Hills by Zealver in CBD Belapur, Golden Nest Retirement Home in Kalamboli, and in Nerul, Second Inning Senior Care Home and SIES Seniors Home. Olive Elder Care, MANUSMRUTI Senior Citizen Home and Dignity Lifestyle Senior Living are also listed in this belt. Compare them all on the Navi Mumbai senior living page.

Senior living and old age home costs in Mumbai

Mumbai is the most expensive market in India for elder care. These are approximate monthly ranges for 2026, based on published rates across the region. Prices vary a great deal with room sharing, care level and location, so always confirm current charges and deposits with the home.

  • Assisted living in Juhu, Vile Parle, Andheri and Bandra: about ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 a month, with luxury private rooms crossing ₹1,20,000.
  • Dementia and memory care in the western suburbs: about ₹60,000 to ₹1,20,000 a month, depending on the level of supervision.
  • Assisted living in Navi Mumbai and Thane: about ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 a month, roughly a third lower than the western suburbs.
  • Budget private old age homes in Mira Road, Vasai, Virar and Badlapur: about ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 a month for shared rooms, meals and basic nursing.
  • Charitable, trust-run and government-aided homes: free to about ₹10,000 a month, often with a one-time deposit and a waiting list.

Our guide on how much an old age home costs in India explains what is usually included and what is billed separately.

What you usually get in Mumbai senior living

Most homes serve vegetarian Maharashtrian and Gujarati meals, and many will cook Jain or low-salt, diabetic-friendly food on request. Staff usually speak Marathi, Hindi and some English, and Gujarati is common in the western suburbs. Rooms are compact by national standards, so a twin-sharing room in Andheri may be smaller than one in Navi Mumbai at the same price. Mumbai's humid climate and heavy monsoon from June to September matter for older people: ask about dehumidifiers, air-conditioning, non-slip floors and how the home handles waterlogging on its street. Most homes include laundry, housekeeping, daily vitals checks and a doctor's visit at least once a week.

How to choose the right senior living home in Mumbai

  • Map the drive to the hospital. In Mumbai traffic a hospital 3 km away can take 30 minutes at peak hours. Ask which hospital the home sends emergencies to and how long it took last time.
  • Check where the family lives. A home near a metro or local train station on your line makes weekly visits realistic.
  • Ask what the fee covers. Medicines, diapers, physiotherapy sessions and specialist visits are often billed separately in Mumbai homes.
  • Visit at night. Night staffing is where homes differ most, especially for dementia and bedridden care.
  • Ask about the monsoon. Check for power backup, lift access during outages and whether the building floods.
  • Read the deposit terms. Our guide on whether old age home deposits are refundable covers the questions to ask.
