Senior living homes in Bengaluru: what families should know

Bengaluru has more choice in senior living than almost any other Indian city. Its mild weather, large hospitals and long history of retirees from the armed forces, public sector and IT have produced every kind of home, from church-run and trust-run old age homes that have served the city for decades to purpose-built retirement communities near the airport and on Kanakapura Road. Whether you are looking for senior living in Bengaluru or simply searching "old age home Bangalore" for a parent, the options here cover independent living, assisted living, nursing care and dementia care.

Elkin lists 49 verified senior living homes in Bengaluru and on its edges. Each one has been checked for registration, care staff, safety and honest pricing, and our advisors can take you on a guided visit. Elkin is a primary member of the Association of Senior Living India (ASLI), the body that sets standards for senior living communities in the country.

Types of senior living homes in Bengaluru

Senior living homes in Bengaluru fall into four broad groups, and this page includes all of them.

Independent living in Bengaluru is for seniors who are well and want their own apartment or villa, with meals, housekeeping, security and a nurse on call taken care of. Bangalore has the country's largest cluster of retirement communities, run by operators such as Columbia Pacific, Primus, Vedaanta, Manasum and CovaiCare, mostly inside larger townships around Devanahalli, Kanakapura Road, Anekal and Nelamangala. Many are luxury communities with pools, clubhouses and resident doctors. See independent living homes in Bengaluru →

Assisted living in Bengaluru suits seniors who need daily help with bathing, medicines or walking, or who are recovering after surgery or a stroke. The city has a deep bench of care-led homes such as KITES, Athulya, Sumukha, Elders Heaven and Novara, most of them in residential neighbourhoods close to large hospitals. Memory care and nursing care. Several assisted living homes here accept residents with dementia, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, and some specialise in bedridden, palliative and post-hospital care. NIMHANS on Hosur Road runs one of the country's best-known memory clinics, which helps when a diagnosis is still unclear.

Charitable and trust-run homes. Churches, Rotary and Lions clubs, the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and older trusts run some of the most trusted old age homes in Bangalore. They are simpler, often pure vegetarian or faith-based, and much lower in cost.

Old age homes and senior living homes in Bengaluru: the difference

An old age home in Bengaluru usually means a smaller home run by a trust or family, with shared or single rooms, simple meals and basic care. Some are free or nearly free for seniors without means; most are paid homes with a modest monthly fee. Senior living homes are larger, newer and more hotel-like, with private apartments, planned activities, on-site nursing and, often, the option to buy. Many families compare both, because a well-run trust home in a familiar neighbourhood can suit a parent better than a luxury community an hour away. Elkin lists both side by side.

Bengaluru is large and its traffic is slow, so the area matters as much as the home. Senior living homes cluster in six belts.

Senior living and old age home costs in Bengaluru

Bengaluru costs more than most Indian cities, and fees swing widely between a trust home and a clinical care home. The ranges below are approximate. Always confirm the current fee, the deposit and what is included with the home.

  • Free and charity-run old age homes in Bangalore: free to about ₹10,000 a month. These are run by churches, service clubs and trusts, are often means-tested and usually have waiting lists.
  • Paid old age homes and senior citizen homes: about ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 a month for a shared or simple single room with meals and basic care.
  • Independent living on a monthly rent: about ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 a month for a studio or 1 BHK with meals and housekeeping, usually with a refundable deposit of a few months' rent.
  • Assisted living in Bengaluru: about ₹35,000 to ₹75,000 a month in most areas. Clinically led homes in Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and HBR Layout can cost ₹75,000 to ₹1.5 lakh a month for a private room.
  • Dementia, bedridden and palliative care: about ₹50,000 to ₹1.2 lakh a month, depending on the staff ratio.
  • Buying into a retirement community: about ₹30 lakh to ₹60 lakh for a studio or 1 BHK on the outskirts, ₹60 lakh to ₹1 crore for a 2 or 3 BHK in the larger townships, and over ₹1 crore for luxury villas, plus a monthly service and dining fee.

Expect GST on some premium fees, and extra charges for a one-to-one attendant, physiotherapy and consumables. Our guides on how much senior living costs in India and what to do if you cannot afford an old age home explain the trade-offs.

What you usually get in a senior living home in Bengaluru

Bangalore's climate is its quiet advantage. Days rarely go much above the mid-thirties even in April and May, and most of the year needs only a fan, so seniors can walk outdoors morning and evening. The monsoon runs from June to October, so check for covered walkways and dry, non-slip floors.

Food is mostly south Indian vegetarian: idli, dosa, ragi mudde, bisi bele bath and sambar, with chapati for those who prefer it. Most care homes cook pure vegetarian, while church-run homes such as Katherine Nivas also serve non-vegetarian meals. Diabetic, low-salt and soft diets are standard. Staff usually speak Kannada and English, and many also speak Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Hindi, which helps the city's many migrant families.

Beyond that, expect three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, 24-hour security, power backup and Wi-Fi. Assisted living homes add trained caregivers on every shift, medicine management, physiotherapy, a visiting doctor and an ambulance tie-up.

How to choose the right senior living home in Bengaluru

There is no single best old age home in Bangalore for everyone. The right home depends on health, budget and where the family lives. These checks help.

  • Time the drive at peak hour. A home 15 km away can take over an hour in Bengaluru traffic. Drive from your own home, and from the nearest hospital, at 6 PM.
  • Match the home to the care need. A luxury retirement community is built for active seniors. If your parent needs help with bathing or has dementia, look first at assisted living homes with nurses on every shift.
  • Check township projects carefully. Some communities are still being built. Ask for the Karnataka RERA number, the handover date and the monthly maintenance before you pay.
  • Ask about medical tie-ups. Ask which hospital the ambulance goes to, how long it takes, and whether a doctor visits weekly.
  • Eat a meal and visit twice, once in the morning and once in the evening, to see staffing at night.
  • Read the deposit and exit terms. Our guide on whether an old age home deposit is refundable covers what to look for.
