What to check when visiting a bedridden care home
A home for bedridden seniors should be judged on different things from a retirement community. Look at how often residents are turned to prevent bedsores, and ask to see the charting. Check that there are enough medical beds with side rails and air mattresses, that suction and oxygen are at hand, and that staff know how to handle a feeding tube or catheter if your parent has one. Ask who decides when to call a doctor, how quickly the ambulance comes at night, and which hospital it goes to. Finally, notice the smell of the rooms and the state of the linen: in a good care home, both tell you the staff have time to do the job properly.
