Senior living homes in Nanded: what families should know
Nanded is the second city of Marathwada and, for most families in the region, the nearest place with real choice in hospitals, transport and elder care. The city grew up on the banks of the Godavari, and it is known across the world for Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib, the gurdwara that marks the place where Guru Gobind Singh spent his last days. Pilgrims, students at Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University and traders from the surrounding talukas keep it busy, yet daily life still moves at a small-city pace.
That pace suits many older people. The question families usually face is not whether Nanded is a good place to grow old, but who will help a parent once the children have moved to Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai or abroad. Purpose-built senior living in Nanded is still a young idea, and most of what exists is small, trust-managed and focused on everyday care. Elkin lists senior living homes in Nanded on this page, explains how they differ from a traditional old age home, and can arrange a guided visit once our advisors have checked the details with the home.
Types of senior living homes in Nanded
Assisted living in Nanded is the main form of organised elder care in the city. It is meant for seniors who need help with bathing, dressing, medicines or walking, or who should not be alone at night. Both homes listed inside Nanded city are classed as assisted living, with trained caregivers, daily health checks and private rooms. See assisted living homes in Nanded →
Independent living, in the sense of a retirement community where a healthy senior rents or buys a flat, has not yet arrived in Nanded. Active seniors who want it usually look at Pune.
Memory care and dementia care are not offered by any dedicated centre in Nanded that we know of. Assisted living homes may accept a parent with mild memory loss, so ask each home what it can manage and when it would recommend a move to a specialist centre in a larger city.
One listing that appears under Nanded needs a clear note. Shantiban Old Age Home 3 is not in Nanded city at all: it is in Nanded Gaon, a village beside the Nanded City township on Sinhgad Road in Pune, several hundred kilometres away. It is an assisted living home with stroke rehabilitation and dementia support, and it may suit a Marathwada family whose children live in Pune. Read more on senior living in Nanded Gaon, Pune.
Old age homes and senior living homes in Nanded: the difference
Search for an old age home in Nanded and you will mostly find vruddhashrams run by trusts, religious bodies and social organisations. They give shelter, simple vegetarian meals and basic supervision, usually in shared rooms, at little or no cost. For an independent senior on a small budget, they remain the main option.
Senior living homes in Nanded aim at a different need. A resident gets a private room with an attached bathroom, a caregiver who helps with personal care, someone checking blood pressure and sugar each day, and a plan for emergencies. The cost is higher because the staffing is higher. Our guide to assisted living versus an old age home sets the two side by side.
Where senior living homes are in Nanded
Vazirabad and the station side. Vazirabad is Nanded's market district, close to Hazur Sahib Nanded railway station and a short ride from the gurdwara and the Godavari ghats. Nanded Senior Living Initiative is listed here as an assisted living home run by Nanded Senior Living Trust Management. Its listing describes trained caregivers, help with personal hygiene, daily health monitoring, medical care, nutritional management and wheelchair access, in a private room of about 200 sq ft. A central address suits families who visit by train. See senior living in Vazirabad.
Degloor Road and the east. Degloor Road leaves the city towards the south-east, through Deglur Naka, towards the Telangana border. Guru Gobind Singh Senior Home, managed by Guru Gobind Singh Trust Management, is listed on this road with a similar set of services: caregivers, health monitoring, emergency response, emotional support and an accessible room. This side of town is quieter than the market and suits families from the eastern talukas. See senior living on Degloor Road.
Shivaji Nagar, Doctor Lane and Vishnupuri. These areas have no listed home yet, but they matter for any senior. Many of Nanded's private hospitals and clinics are around Shivaji Nagar and Doctor Lane, and the Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital is at Vishnupuri, south-west of the city near the university.
We could not confirm the Vazirabad or Degloor Road homes through an independent website or directory. Before you travel, ask our advisors to check the street address, the trust behind each home and current vacancies with the home itself.
Senior living and old age home costs in Nanded
Nanded is one of the more affordable cities in Maharashtra for elder care. The ranges below are approximate and are only a starting point; fees change with the room and the care needed, so confirm the current figure with each home.
- Free and charitable old age homes in Nanded: free to about ₹6,000 a month, usually with shared rooms and limited places.
- Paid old age homes: about ₹8,000 to ₹18,000 a month for a simple room, meals and basic supervision.
- Assisted living in Nanded: about ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month for a private room, caregivers and daily health checks.
- Bedridden, post-stroke or dementia care: about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 a month, and more if a one-to-one attendant is needed.
Medicines, adult diapers, physiotherapy and hospital visits are usually billed separately. Our guide to how much an old age home costs in India shows how Nanded compares with bigger cities.
What you usually get in a senior living home in Nanded
Food is Marathwada home cooking: jowar or wheat bhakri, varan bhaat, dal, usal and seasonal vegetables, usually vegetarian. Nanded's mixed population means some families expect Punjabi or Hyderabadi dishes, so ask the kitchen whether it can adapt and how it manages diabetic, low-salt and soft diets.
The heat comes next. Marathwada summers are long and dry, and afternoons in April and May are punishing. Check that rooms are cooled, that the power backup runs the coolers or fans and not just the lights, and that drinking water is reliable.
Language is the third point. Caregivers in Nanded mostly speak Marathi and Hindi, and many also speak Urdu or Punjabi; a few speak Telugu. A parent who is unwell or confused settles faster with staff who speak their language.
How to choose the right senior living home in Nanded
There is no single best old age home in Nanded for every family. These checks help you narrow it down.
- Confirm the basics first. Small homes change address and staffing more often than large ones. Ask for the full address, the registration of the trust and the names of the people who run it.
- Ask who is there at night. Find out how many caregivers work the night shift and whether a nurse is on site or on call.
- Time the hospital run. Ask which hospital the home calls in an emergency, and how long the drive takes through market traffic or during pilgrimage seasons.
- Visit in the heat. An afternoon visit in summer shows how the home keeps rooms cool.
- Eat a meal. Taste the bhakri and dal, and ask about special diets.
- Read the exit terms. Know the notice period and what happens to any deposit.
