Senior living homes in Salcete: what families should know
Salcete is the heart of South Goa: Margao, the state's commercial capital, sits in the middle, with old Catholic villages such as Benaulim, Navelim, Colva, Chandor and Loutulim spread around it towards the sea and the hills. Many Salcete families have children working abroad or on ships, and caring for an ageing parent from a distance is a familiar problem here. That is why the taluka has a long tradition of convent-run homes for the aged, and why families searching for senior living in Salcete often want a home close to the parish and the relatives their parent already knows.
Elkin lists two verified senior living homes in Salcete, both run by congregations of religious sisters and both within a short drive of Margao. Our team can take you on a guided visit, explain what each home includes and help you compare them with homes in Bardez and around Old Goa if the family is spread across the state.
Types of senior living homes in Salcete
The two homes cover the two most common needs in South Goa.
Assisted living with medical support. Nazareth Home in Dogorim, Navelim, is run by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. It lists medical care, physiotherapy, memory care support, fresh home-cooked meals and wheelchair access, which makes it suitable for a parent who needs steady help through the day. A home for seniors who are still fairly independent. Divine Providence Home in Benaulim is run by the Franciscan Hospitallers of the Immaculate Conception. It is listed for independent living, but it also lists nursing care, help with personal hygiene and daily health monitoring, so a resident can stay on as needs grow. Salcete has no buy-in retirement community among these listings. Families who want a private apartment in a serviced community usually look at the projects near Panjim and Old Goa, described on the senior living in Goa page.
Old age homes and senior living homes in Salcete: the difference
Most people in South Goa still say "old age home" or "asilo", and Salcete has plenty of them: parish and convent homes in Benaulim, Verna and Carmona, long-running asylums in Margao, Loutulim and Cuncolim, and private charitable homes such as the one at Chandor. They are usually modest, warm and inexpensive, with shared rooms and a few free places for seniors who have no support.
Senior living homes add more privacy and more care: single rooms, nursing staff, physiotherapy, memory support and an organised day. In Salcete the two models overlap, since both homes listed here are old age homes in the traditional sense that now offer assisted living services. If you are searching for an old age home in Salcete or in Margao, these two are a sensible place to start.
Best areas for senior living in Salcete
Benaulim and the coastal belt. Benaulim sits between Colva and Varca, a few kilometres west of Margao, and is known for its quiet beach, its carpenters and the St John the Baptist church where St Joseph Vaz was baptised. Divine Providence Home is in Cana, Benaulim. The village suits a parent who wants sea air and a slower pace without being far from town. Read more on senior living in Benaulim.
Navelim and the Margao edge. Navelim adjoins Margao on its southern side, and Dogorim is one of its wards. Nazareth Home is here, which puts it closest of the two to Margao's hospitals, markets and Madgaon station. Read more on senior living in Dogorim.
Margao, Chandor and the inland villages. Families from Margao town, Curtorim, Chandor or Loutulim usually find Navelim the shortest drive. Margao also has its own long-running homes, and our advisors can tell you which ones have places.
Senior living and old age home costs in Salcete
Salcete is one of the more affordable parts of Goa for elder care. As a rough guide, with each home to confirm its own current fee:

- A private room with meals and light support: about ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 a month.
- Assisted living with nursing and physiotherapy: roughly ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 a month.
- Dementia, palliative or bedridden care: about ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 a month, often with an attendant charged separately.
Add medicines, consumables and hospital transport to the monthly fee, and ask about the deposit. If money is tight, our guide on what to do if you cannot afford an old age home lists the support available.
Daily life in a South Goa senior home
Meals follow Goan home cooking, with rice, fish curry, vegetables and fresh pao from the village bakery, and the sisters adjust for diabetes and soft diets. The day usually includes prayers or Mass, rest after lunch and time in the garden in the evening. The big village feasts, including the feast of St John the Baptist at Benaulim in June, bring old friends and families back.
For health care, Margao is the hub of South Goa, with Hospicio Hospital and other government and private hospitals in the town, and Goa Medical College at Bambolim about an hour north for specialist care. Madgaon station on the Konkan Railway and Dabolim airport make visits easier for relatives coming from Mumbai, Bengaluru or abroad. Staff speak Konkani and English, and usually Hindi.
How to choose a senior living home in Salcete
- Check who the home admits. Some homes in South Goa are for women only. Ask before you visit.
- Match the home to the care your parent needs today and next year. A parent who may need physiotherapy or memory support soon is better placed where those services already exist.
- Ask about hospital runs. Find out whether emergencies go to Hospicio, a private hospital in Margao or Goa Medical College, and who accompanies the resident.
- Visit during the rains. Low-lying villages near the coast get waterlogged in a heavy monsoon; check access roads, damp and power backup.
- Read the deposit and exit terms, and ask whether a family member must sign as guardian.
