Maval is the hill taluka of Pune district that runs up the Sahyadris to Lonavla and Khandala. Lonavla sits at about 624 metres, roughly 64 km from Pune and 96 km from Mumbai, on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old highway, and it is a stop for most trains between the two cities. Around the town are the landscapes Maharashtra knows from monsoon weekends: Bhushi dam, Tiger's Leap, the Buddhist caves at Karla and Bhaja, and the road towards Pawna lake. It is also the home of chikki.

For older people, the draw of the Lonavla side of Maval is the climate and the calm. Summers are milder than in Pune, the hills are green for months after the rains, and away from the tourist strip the villages are quiet. Many Mumbai families also know Lonavla well from holidays, so a parent here feels familiar and is within reach from either city. The catch is the monsoon: Lonavla gets some of the heaviest rain in the state between June and September, and a home must be ready for it.

Awaas Seva Sadan, a trust-run home in the hills

Awaas Seva Sadan is a non-profit home for the elderly, founded in 2005 by Shri Rameshwar Lal Toshniwal. It stands at Dongargaonwadi on the Pawna Road outside Lonavla, surrounded by landscaped gardens, a fruit orchard and a vegetable garden. The trust's aim is to look after the spiritual, physical and mental wellbeing of older people in a safe and caring setting, and it is meant for seniors who need regular help with daily living but not round-the-clock medical attention.

From its listing and its own description, residents get:

  • People on site at all times. A live-in manager available around the clock, with caretakers and support staff.
  • Medical oversight. Weekly visits from a doctor, routine medical check-ups and a doctor on call for emergencies.
  • Rehabilitation. Physical rehab therapy to help residents keep their strength and mobility.
  • A furnished home. Furnished rooms, Wi-Fi and power backup, with the gardens for walks.

Awaas is a good fit for a parent who is mostly well but no longer safe living alone, who would enjoy a garden and fresh air, and who does not need a nurse at the bedside. As a trust-run home, its fees and admission rules differ from private care homes, so ask the trust directly.

Kutumb, on the Pune side of the taluka

Maval's other listed option is about 25 km east, nearer Talegaon. Kutumb by Naiknavare at Vadgaon Maval is a community where three generations can live together, with care services added for elders: nursing, physiotherapy, an on-site ambulance, housekeeping and vegetarian meals. Families buy either a villa or an apartment at Kutumb. It suits a family moving together rather than a parent moving alone, and it is closer to Pune's hospitals than Lonavla.

Health, travel and daily life near Lonavla

  • Hospital access. Sanjeevani Medical Foundation, a 50-bed NABH-accredited multispecialty hospital in Lonavla, is the main local hospital. For complex cases, families usually go to Pawana Hospital near Talegaon or to Pune.
  • Rail and road. Lonavla station has suburban trains to Pune and long-distance trains to Mumbai. The expressway brings Mumbai within about two hours by car, outside holiday weekends.
  • Monsoon readiness. Check that paths are covered, floors are non-slip, the generator is reliable and the home keeps a stock of medicines in case roads are hit by landslides or flooding.
  • Everyday life. Lonavla's market covers pharmacies, banks and groceries, and local temples, walks and visiting family fill the week.

Costs for senior care around Lonavla
