Kadi is a municipal town of about 80,000 people in the south of Mehsana district, surrounded by more than a hundred villages that farm cotton, wheat and sorghum. Its economy runs on cotton ginning, cottonseed oil refineries and a growing ceramic industry, and its mornings start early at the green vegetable market. Temples such as Umiya Mata and Meladi Mata, and the old Malhavrav fort, give the town a strong sense of its past.
Like much of North Gujarat, Kadi has seen many of its young people move to Ahmedabad, Mumbai and abroad. That leaves a growing number of elderly parents at home, and it is why families search for senior living in Kadi rather than moving a parent to a strange city. The town has a long-established home for the aged, run by Catholic sisters, and Elkin can arrange a guided visit there.
Sandhya Vishram, Irana Road
Sandhya Vishram has been run since 1994 by the Sisters of St. Ann on Irana Road in Kadi. It was set up to care for elderly people, including those who have been left without support by their children or relatives, and it is open to both men and women regardless of caste or religion.
The home works as assisted living. The sisters and their trained caregivers help residents with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene, and nursing care is part of daily life. Physiotherapy helps residents stay mobile after a fall or illness, and ambulance support is arranged in emergencies. Meals are freshly cooked each day. Residents also get emotional and social support, which in a home like this often means prayer, conversation and festivals celebrated together. Rooms are furnished, and there is a garden, Wi-Fi and power backup.
Homes run by religious congregations often have their own admission process. When you call, ask whether there is a waiting list, whether priority goes to seniors with no family, what the monthly contribution is, and how the home manages a resident whose health declines sharply.
Living in Kadi as a senior
- Local hospitals. Kadi has its own hospitals, including Bhagyoday Hospital and Rhythm Medical and Heart Hospital, for routine treatment and first response. Serious cases usually go to Mehsana, Gandhinagar or Ahmedabad.
- A quieter pace. Kadi is a small town, with less traffic and noise than the cities, and familiar food and festivals.
- Nature nearby. Thol Lake, a bird sanctuary about 22 km away, fills with migratory birds in winter and makes a gentle family outing.
- Within reach of the cities. State highways link Kadi to Kalol, Mehsana and Ahmedabad, so children working in Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar can visit on a weekend.
Approximate costs in Kadi
Senior care in Kadi and the rest of Mehsana district is cheaper than in Ahmedabad. As a rough guide, assisted living with nursing costs about ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 a month in the district, while charitable old age homes charge from nothing to about ₹8,000. A home run by a religious congregation may ask for a monthly contribution well below the private rate, based on what a family can pay. Bedridden care with a personal attendant costs more. Ask what the fee covers: medicines, hospital transfers and extra therapy are often separate. Our guide on who pays for old age homes in India explains the support available when savings are limited.
Old age homes and other choices near Kadi
Many families search for an old age home in Kadi or Kalol before they know what level of care a parent needs. If your parent is independent, a traditional vruddhashram may be enough. If they need nursing or help through the day, Sandhya Vishram is the established choice in town. For more options:
