Wakad is the gateway to Hinjawadi and one of the most populated suburbs of Pimpri-Chinchwad. The Mumbai-Bengaluru highway runs along its western edge, the Mula river and Baner lie to the south, and Pimple Nilakh, Pimple Saudagar and Aundh are to the east. Over the last twenty years it has filled with tall housing societies for IT families, and with them came schools, hospitals, restaurants and Phoenix Mall of the Millennium.

For older people, Wakad is less about quiet and more about access. A large share of Pune's working families now live here or in the next suburb, so a parent in a Wakad home is often ten minutes from a child's flat. Three BRTS routes meet in the area, the Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar metro line is routed through it, and the highway and expressway make it easy for relatives travelling from Mumbai. That is why many families start their search for senior living in Wakad before looking anywhere else in PCMC.

Elkin lists verified senior living homes in Wakad and its neighbouring suburbs. Our advisors can arrange a guided visit, including an evening visit after office hours.

Swarnavihar Retirement Homes, Akshaya Nivas Wakad

Swarnavihar Retirement Homes (Akshaya Nivas Wakad) is the Wakad unit of Swarnavihar, a Pune group of old age homes that also runs centres in Baner and on Sinhgad Road. It is in Chowdhari Park, near the police line in Wakad. Despite the name "retirement homes", this is an assisted living home with a strong nursing side, and the listing reads more like a small care centre than a residential society:

  • Nursing and doctors. Nursing care, regular doctor visits, geriatric care, emergency response and hospital services when a resident needs them.
  • Complex conditions. Dementia care and paralytic care, which covers residents left with weakness or paralysis after a stroke.
  • After surgery or illness. Post-operative care for residents coming out of hospital who are not yet ready to go home.
  • End-of-life care. Palliative and hospice care, so a resident can stay in familiar surroundings to the end.
  • Help on call. Trained caregivers and an on-call attendant service, in furnished rooms with Wi-Fi, a garden and power backup.

Akshaya Nivas suits a parent who needs hands-on care every day, especially one who has had a stroke or is living with dementia. When you visit, ask about the ratio of caregivers to residents at night, whether rooms are single or shared, and how physiotherapy is arranged.

Healthcare and everyday life in Wakad

  • Hospitals. Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Thergaon is a short drive north, Ruby Hall Clinic Hinjawadi is just across the highway, and Jupiter Hospital in Baner is across the river. Wakad itself has many smaller multispecialty hospitals and diagnostic centres.
  • Transport. BRTS routes towards Nashik Phata, Aundh and Ravet, and towards Kalewadi Phata and Dehu-Alandi, pass close by, and PMPML buses run to Shivajinagar and Pimpri.
  • Daily needs. Supermarkets, pharmacies and banks sit within most housing pockets, and the Wakad and Pimple Saudagar food streets are a draw for residents who like an outing with family.
  • Things to plan for. Traffic around the Wakad bridge and Bhumkar Chowk is heavy at peak hours, and some internal roads are still being upgraded. Pick visiting times to match.

What care costs in Wakad

Wakad prices sit in the Pimpri-Chinchwad band, below Baner and Aundh but slightly above the outer edges of PCMC. Treat these as approximate monthly figures and ask the home for its current rates:

  • Assisted living: about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 a month.
  • Dementia, paralysis, bedridden or palliative care: about ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 a month, more with a one-to-one attendant or ICU-level nursing.
  • Basic paid old age homes in Pune, with shared rooms: about ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Extras to budget for: medicines, consumables, physiotherapy outside the package and a refundable deposit.
