New Town, also known as Rajarhat New Town, is the planned township that has grown east of Salt Lake since the late 1990s. It is laid out in Action Areas, with wide roads, cycle tracks, large parks and modern housing, and it is run by its own development authority rather than the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Action Area 1B is in the older, more settled first phase, close to the Narkelbagan area and to Swapno Bhor, a park designed for senior citizens.
That makes senior living in New Town Action Area 1B a natural option for families in Salt Lake, Rajarhat, Kestopur and Lake Town, and for NRI children who want their parents in a modern, well-planned part of the city. Elkin lists one senior residence here, and our advisors can explain its application process and arrange a visit.
Snehodiya: the state's senior residence in New Town
Snehodiya was built by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO), the state agency that developed New Town, and opened in 2019. It stands on about three acres and rises ten floors, with around 150 serviced single and double units, the top two floors set aside for larger doubles.
Rooms are air-conditioned and furnished, with beds, wardrobes, a dressing table and a wall-mounted television, and many have broad balconies. Each floor has its own dining area, lounge, pantry, nurse's room and attendants' room, and the building has sky gardens, a utility shop and rooms where visiting family can stay.
The care model is closer to assisted living than to a simple old age home. Attendants are on every floor round the clock; an in-house physician and nurses are on site; and there is a 24-hour emergency medical room with a defibrillator and an ambulance on call. Residents get routine blood tests every six months, regular doctor visits, physiotherapy with hydrotherapy and yoga, three meals a day plus snacks planned by a nutritionist, and housekeeping and laundry. Security covers every common area by CCTV.
Admission is handled through designated Axis Bank branches, and applicants go through a medical evaluation. Most of the tariff is paid up front in instalments rather than as a simple monthly rent, so read the refund terms carefully.

Costs for senior living in New Town
New Town sits at the upper end of Kolkata prices. As a rough guide, monthly-fee assisted living in New Town and Salt Lake costs about ₹35,000 to ₹70,000 a month depending on the room and care level. Deposit-based residences here can instead ask for a substantial lump sum, often in lakhs of rupees, plus monthly service charges.
