Goraj is a village in Waghodia taluka, out in the countryside well beyond Vadodara's city limits, near the town of Waghodia. It is not a suburb, and families should not expect city conveniences on the doorstep. What Goraj does have is the Muni Seva Ashram, one of Gujarat's best-known service campuses, and inside it a senior living community that has drawn older people from Vadodara and far beyond for years.
Anuben Thakkar started the ashram in 1978 on barren land, and it has grown into a campus of a few hundred acres with schools, an orphanage, vocational training, farms, care for the elderly and specialist hospitals. It was an early adopter of solar power, with its first panels installed in 1984, and much of what it uses is grown or generated on site. Vanaprastha Mandir is the senior living community of the Muni Seva Ashram Trust. Its name comes from vanaprastha, the stage of life in which, in Indian tradition, a person steps back from household duties towards reflection and service, and that idea shapes daily life here more than any amenity list.
Residents live within the green, eco-friendly campus, with organic sattvic meals and the ashram's farms and gardens all around. Days are unhurried, and residents share their surroundings with a community whose whole purpose is service, which many older people find gives their days meaning. - A rural setting. Expect village roads, farmland and open sky. Shops, banks and markets are in Waghodia town rather than next door.
- Medical care on campus and nearby. Besides the ashram's own hospital services, the Waghodia area has large medical college hospitals, including Dhiraj General Hospital at Piparia and Parul Sevashram Hospital. For other specialist care, residents travel into Vadodara.
- Visiting takes planning. Vadodara is roughly 30 km or more away by road, depending on where in the city you start, so family visits are usually weekend trips rather than quick drop-ins.
- Cleaner air, quieter nights. For many residents, the peace of the campus and the absence of traffic are the reason to come.
