Diamond Harbour Road is the great southern artery out of Kolkata. It starts in the city near New Alipore, runs through Behala, Thakurpukur and Joka, and then carries on into South 24 Parganas towards Amtala, Bishnupur and eventually the river port of Diamond Harbour. Beyond Joka the scenery changes quickly: fewer high-rises, more ponds, paddy fields and orchards, and gated holiday and residential estates set back from the highway. That stretch is where the most distinctive senior living on Diamond Harbour Road sits.
Elkin lists one senior living home along this road. It lies outside the municipal limits of Kolkata, at Amtala, so this page explains honestly what the location means for a parent's day-to-day life.
Jagriti Dham at Amtala
Jagriti Dham is a senior residence developed by the Infinity Group on a plot of about two acres inside the Merlin Greens estate at Kriparampur, Amtala, roughly 11 km south of IIM Calcutta at Joka. It was planned around the idea of active ageing, for retired people who are well enough to live independently but want company, services and someone to call at any hour.
Its best-known feature is the building itself. Jagriti Dham is certified by the Indian Green Building Council, and was among the first senior living buildings in eastern India to earn a green rating. Homes are furnished, the campus has gardens, Wi-Fi and power backup, and residents have the open grounds of the surrounding estate for walks.
Residents live independently in their own units, with services on demand and round-the-clock support from the on-site team. The usual arrangement is an upfront deposit plus a monthly charge that covers meals, laundry, electricity and other services, but check the current terms carefully, including what happens to the deposit if a resident leaves.
Jagriti Dham suits active seniors and couples. A parent who already needs daily nursing or dementia care will be better served closer to the city's hospitals.
Living south of Joka: the practical side
Distance to hospitals. This is the most important point to weigh. The nearest large hospital is ESIC Medical College at Joka, with the Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre at Thakurpukur beyond it; the big private multi-speciality hospitals are a longer drive into the city. Ask the home about its ambulance arrangement and doctor visits.
Getting there. Joka metro station, the southern end of the Purple Line, is the natural meeting point for visitors, with a short drive south from there. Diamond Harbour Road also has frequent buses.
Peace and fresh air. In return for the distance, residents get quiet mornings, greenery and far less pollution and noise than in central Kolkata.
Approximate costs on Diamond Harbour Road

As a rough guide, independent senior living with meals and services in this belt costs about ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 a month, on top of any upfront deposit, which at deposit-based residences can run to several lakh rupees. Assisted living in the Behala to Joka stretch costs about ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 a month. Confirm current fees and deposit terms with the home. Our guide on whether an old age home deposit is refundable explains what to ask.
