Kottivakkam is a seaside neighbourhood on the East Coast Road, just south of Thiruvanmiyur and north of Palavakkam. It is one of the first stretches of ECR as you leave the city: quiet residential streets running down to Kottivakkam beach on one side, and ECR's shops, restaurants and clinics on the other. Thiruvanmiyur's bus terminus and MRTS station are a few minutes away, and Adyar is just beyond.
What sets senior living in Kottivakkam apart is range. Within a few streets, Elkin lists four homes covering almost every level of care, from independent living with a traditional Brahmin kitchen to round-the-clock nursing for residents on oxygen or tube feeding. That makes it a useful place to start if you are not yet sure what your parent needs.
Four homes in Kottivakkam, by level of care
Ayushman Bhava Living is listed as independent living, but with real support behind it. The kitchen serves Brahmin vegetarian food, which many Chennai families ask for by name. Caregivers help with personal hygiene when needed, health is checked daily, and the home offers physiotherapy, recovery care after hospital, palliative care and memory care support for Alzheimer's and dementia. Rooms are furnished and wheelchair accessible.
Aayushka Assisted Living - Kottivakkam is part of a small group of assisted living homes Aayushka runs across Chennai. Trained caregivers help with daily routines, and the home provides medical care, physiotherapy, memory care support, recovery care and palliative care in furnished rooms with a garden.
Nandhini Senior Citizens Home - Phase II is the Kottivakkam branch of the Nandhini homes, whose first phase is in Neelankarai. It offers assisted living with caregivers, daily health monitoring, medical care, emotional support and vegetarian food, in furnished rooms of around 350 sq ft. It suits a parent who needs everyday help in a homely setting.
Turiya Health Care is the home for the most complex needs. It has resident doctors and nursing staff, and its listing covers oxygen, suction and a defibrillator for emergencies, Ryles tube feeding and IV support, tracheostomy care, wound care, sponge baths and diaper changes, pain management in palliative care, memory care support, physiotherapy and a psychologist. For a bedridden parent coming out of an ICU, this is closer to a step-down nursing unit than an old age home.

What care costs in Kottivakkam
ECR close to the city is among the pricier parts of Chennai. As an approximate guide, independent senior living here costs about ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 a month, assisted living about ₹40,000 to ₹75,000, and bedridden or dementia care about ₹50,000 to ₹90,000. Homes that manage tracheostomies, tube feeding or IV lines can cost more, because they need nurses at the bedside round the clock. Medicines and consumables are usually billed separately.
