Nemmeli, also spelt Nimmeli, is a coastal village on the East Coast Road between Kovalam and Mahabalipuram, roughly 40 km south of central Chennai. The backwaters meet the sea here, the beach is a few minutes away, and the stretch is lined with resorts rather than offices. Senior living in Nemmeli is aimed at a particular kind of retiree: someone active and independent who wants a calm, sea-facing life, and who is happy to drive into the city for specialist appointments.

Swarang Sophisticated Senior Living by Ashiana is a purpose-built independent living community developed by Ashiana Housing with Arihant Foundations. Ashiana is one of the better-known names in Indian senior housing, and Swarang is its Chennai project. Public announcements describe a low-rise, low-density campus of about 10.87 acres near the Sheraton resort on ECR, with 1, 2 and 3 BHK homes and penthouses.
The listing shows the support most active seniors look for: daily health monitoring, an ambulance on site for emergencies, nurses on call, physiotherapy and medical care. The campus has a swimming pool and gardens, Wi-Fi and power backup, and it is pet friendly, so a parent can bring a dog or cat along.
Two points matter before you commit. First, homes here are bought, not rented, so this suits a long-term move rather than a short stay. Second, the project is being built in phases, and the first phase was scheduled for completion in 2027 under its RERA registration. Living on this stretch of ECR
- Sea air and space. The backwaters, the beach and low-rise buildings make Nemmeli far quieter than the city. Many retirees choose ECR for morning walks by the sea and a slower pace.
- Healthcare is a drive away. There is no large hospital in Nemmeli. Chettinad Health City in Kelambakkam is the nearest big multi-speciality hospital, reached across the Kovalam to Kelambakkam road, and the hospitals of OMR and Adyar are further north. An on-site ambulance and nurse, as Swarang lists, is important for this reason.
- Getting around. ECR is a fast, scenic road, but buses are infrequent and there is no train. Families visiting from the city should plan on about an hour by car from Adyar, depending on traffic.
- Day-to-day needs. Groceries and pharmacies are in Kovalam and Thiruporur, and Mahabalipuram's temples and shore are close for an outing with grandchildren.

Coastal senior living is at the upper end of Chennai prices because of the setting and the size of the homes. As a rough guide:
- Buying into a retirement community on ECR: around ₹80 lakh for a smaller home to well over ₹1.5 crore for larger units and penthouses, plus a monthly maintenance and services fee.
- Monthly-fee independent living along ECR: about ₹30,000 to ₹55,000 a month where it is available.
