Mahabalipuram, also called Mamallapuram, is the old Pallava port town on the East Coast Road, around 55 km south of central Chennai. Its Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas and the great rock relief of Arjuna's Penance are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the town lives at a gentler pace than the city: fishermen on the beach in the morning, stone carvers' workshops along the lanes, and quiet evenings by the sea.
Senior living in Mahabalipuram is for a specific kind of retirement. It suits healthy, independent couples who want sea air, space and a slower life, and who are happy to be some distance from the city. Golden Planet Township, near Thirukazhukundram
Golden Planet Township by Golden Planet Senior Heritage Homes is about 15 km inland from Mahabalipuram, at Thirukazhukundram, the town known for the Vedagiriswarar temple on its hill. It offers three-bedroom villas of around 1,800 sq ft and smaller apartments of around 650 sq ft, all furnished, with a pool and gardens.
The care side includes daily health monitoring, trained caregivers, help with personal hygiene, medical care, emergency response and wheelchair access. The kitchen follows a sattvic diet, which will appeal to families who keep a traditional vegetarian household.
Life near Mahabalipuram for retirees
- Sea, monuments and temples. Beach walks, the heritage sites, the Sthalasayana Perumal temple in town and the hill temple at Thirukazhukundram give residents plenty to do at an easy pace.
- Hospitals need a plan. The nearest large hospitals are some distance away, around Kelambakkam on OMR and in Chengalpattu. Ask each community exactly which hospital its ambulance goes to and how long the drive takes at night.
- The drive to Chennai. ECR runs straight up to the city, and the drive to Thiruvanmiyur takes a little over an hour outside the evening rush. There is no train, so visits are by car or bus.
- Weather. The coast is breezy, but the northeast monsoon from October to December brings heavy rain and the occasional cyclone, so ask about building design and power backup.
What a retirement home costs near Mahabalipuram
Land here is cheaper than in the city, so homes are larger for the price.
