Nemam is a quiet village in Poonamallee taluk, Thiruvallur district, on the western fringe of Chennai. It sits between Thirumazhisai, Vellavedu and Poonamallee, about 24 km from the city centre, and it is best known locally for the Nemam tank, a large irrigation lake, and for its temples. Most families who search for senior living in Nemam already have a home here or in one of the new layouts nearby, and want a parent close by rather than across the city.
There is no senior living community or old age home inside Nemam itself yet, and Elkin does not list one here today. That does not mean you have to look far. A cluster of verified assisted living homes and retirement communities sits 10 to 20 km east of the village, along the Poonamallee High Road towards Maduravoyal and Porur. This page explains what is available nearby, what it costs, and how to choose.
Why a home near Nemam can still work
Choosing a home on this side of the city means a parent stays within reach of the family and of the Poonamallee and Thiruverkadu belt they know. The trade-off is distance from the big city hospitals, so the nearest medical support matters more here than it would in central Chennai.
- Hospitals to the west. Panimalar Medical College Hospital near Poonamallee and Saveetha Medical College Hospital at Thandalam are the large teaching hospitals closest to Nemam. Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre in Porur and MIOT International in Manapakkam handle specialist and emergency care further east.
- Road access. Nemam connects to the Poonamallee High Road and the Chennai Bypass, so Maduravoyal, Porur and Koyambedu are reachable by car. Public transport is thin: the nearest suburban rail stations are at Thiruninravur and Veppampattu, several kilometres away, so plan for a driver or a cab for visits.
- Village pace. Lakes, paddy land and small temples make the area calm and green, which suits seniors who dislike traffic and noise. Shops, pharmacies and banks are mostly in Poonamallee and Thirumazhisai.
Senior living homes near Nemam
Because there is no home in the village, most Nemam families compare three kinds of options.
Assisted living a short drive east. The closest verified care homes are in Mel Ayanambakkam and Maduravoyal, both on the road towards Koyambedu. These homes offer help with bathing, dressing and medicines, nursing support and supervised meals, and several accept residents recovering after a hospital stay. Independent living communities. For a healthy parent who wants their own apartment with meals, housekeeping and security handled, the nearest purpose-built retirement communities are around Gerugambakkam and Porur. See independent living in Chennai →
Dementia care. Specialist memory care is not available on this side of the city in any numbers. Families usually look at dedicated dementia homes elsewhere in Chennai, or at assisted living homes that accept early-stage residents. See memory care homes in Chennai →
What senior living near Nemam costs
Fees on the western edge of Chennai sit at or slightly below the city average, because land and staff costs are lower than in central areas. As a rough guide for homes within reach of Nemam:
- Trust-run old age homes: free to about ₹8,000 a month, where places are available.
- Independent senior living: about ₹18,000 to ₹40,000 a month for rental or monthly-fee arrangements.
- Assisted living: about ₹28,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the level of help needed.
- Dementia or bedridden care: about ₹42,000 to ₹80,000 a month.
- Buying into a retirement community: roughly ₹45 lakh to ₹90 lakh on the western outskirts, plus monthly maintenance.
These are approximate figures. Every home prices differently, so confirm the current fee, deposit and inclusions directly with the home. Our guide to old age home entry fees and monthly charges explains the usual structure.
