Kamshet is a small Maval town in the Sahyadri foothills, about 45 km from Pune and 16 km short of Lonavla. The old Mumbai-Pune highway and the Pune-Lonavla railway line both pass through it, the Indrayani river runs alongside, and the hills around it are known for paragliding, Pawna lake, the Bedse and Karla caves and old Shiva temples such as Kondeshwar. Outside the market area it is still farmland and villages, and the air and quiet are the main reasons people come.
Senior living in Kamshet is built around that setting. Both homes here are retreats for older people who are largely independent, want green space and a slower pace, and are comfortable being an hour from the big Pune hospitals in exchange. Families in Pune and Mumbai like it because it sits between the two cities: Pune is about 45 minutes by car on a good day and Mumbai about two hours.

Two retreats for seniors in Kamshet
Gagan NuLife is a senior living community developed by Gagan Properties, first launched in 2013 as resort-style residences for seniors near Kamshet. The plan, by the senior living architects Perkins Eastman, set independent living apartments for people aged 55 and above alongside assisted living apartments for those who need nursing support, across a campus of about 14 acres. Homes are furnished one and two bedroom apartments, bought rather than rented. The listing covers daily health monitoring, an ambulance on site, physiotherapy, post-hospitalisation recovery, curated diet plans, wheelchair access and caregivers on request, along with a swimming pool, gardens, Wi-Fi and power backup. It suits a couple or single parent who wants their own home in the hills, with care available as the years go on.
Mira Ghar, Senior Living Home is run by the Mirakanj Foundation at Naigaon, behind the petrol pump on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, a few minutes' walk from Kamshet station. It is a residential home for people over 60 who want company and comfort without the work of running a house. Rooms are furnished, meals are planned with nutrition advisers, and there is a library and green surroundings. The listing notes 24x7 nurse and caregiver support within the facility. Unlike NuLife, residents here pay to stay rather than buy, which suits families who want to try hill living before committing.
Practical life in Kamshet
- Hospitals. Kamshet has local clinics, but serious care means a drive. Pawana Hospital, a 203-bed NABH-accredited hospital at Somatane Phata near Talegaon, is the nearest large hospital towards Pune, and Sanjeevani Medical Foundation in Lonavla is the main option in the other direction. Ask each home how it handles a night emergency.
- Getting there. Kamshet station is on the Pune-Lonavla suburban line, so relatives can come by local train. By road, take the expressway or the old highway.
- Weather. Winters are cool and pleasant. The monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rain to Maval, so check covered walkways and slip-free floors.
- Things to do. Walks, temple visits, Pawna lake and the caves for day trips, and plenty of birdlife.
Costs for Kamshet retirement homes
Prices depend on whether your parent buys a home or pays a monthly fee. These are approximate figures for planning; confirm current terms with each home:
- Buying into a senior living community: about ₹30 lakh to ₹60 lakh for compact homes on the edges of Pune such as Kamshet, plus monthly maintenance and dining charges.
- Monthly-fee independent living or a residential old age home in Maval: fees vary widely with the room and the services, so ask for a written breakdown.
- Assisted living with nursing in the Maval belt: about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 a month.
- Extras: medicines, a personal attendant, extra physiotherapy and sometimes a refundable deposit.
