Senior living homes in Pune: what families should know

Pune has a longer history with retirement than almost any Indian city. For decades it was known as a pensioners' paradise, and the old Poona of bungalows, mild winters and good hospitals still draws retirees from Mumbai, from the Gulf and from abroad. Today senior living in Pune covers the full range: charitable old age homes in the peths, small assisted living homes run by geriatric nurses in Baner and Kothrud, dementia care centres, and purpose-built retirement communities that families buy into, from Bavdhan and Hinjawadi to the Maval countryside near Talegaon.

Elkin lists 54 verified senior living homes in Pune. Every home on this page has been checked for registration, care staff, safety and honest pricing, and our advisors can take you on a guided visit to any of them. Elkin is also a primary member of the Association of Senior Living India (ASLI), which sets standards for senior living communities across the country.

Types of senior living homes in Pune

Independent living and retirement communities in Pune suit healthy seniors who want their own flat, with meals, security, housekeeping and company handled for them. Renting or buying. Most care homes in Pune work on a monthly fee, while the retirement communities sell flats and, in a few places, villas, such as Kutumb by Naiknavare at Vadgaon Maval and Paranjape Athashri Homes for Seniors. Buying suits a long, independent stay. If care needs may rise soon, a monthly assisted living arrangement is the safer start; our guide on leasing versus owning in senior living sets out the trade-offs.

Old age homes and senior living homes in Pune: the difference

"Old age home in Pune" is by far the most searched phrase for elder care in the city, and the city has many. Traditional old age homes here, or vruddhashrams, are usually run by charitable trusts, offer shared rooms and simple Maharashtrian vegetarian food, and charge little or nothing. Niwara Old Age Home in Navi Peth, run by a public charitable trust, is one of the best known, and smaller paid old age homes such as the Shantiban Old Age Home branches serve the Warje and Sinhgad Road side.

Senior living homes in Pune are built for a different kind of stay. Residents get a private room or their own flat, planned meals, housekeeping, activities and, when needed, nursing care, physiotherapy and an ambulance tie-up. Elkin lists both on this page, so you can compare a trust-run old age home with a private senior living home side by side.

Senior living and old age home costs in Pune

Costs in Pune depend on the area, the room and, above all, how much care your parent needs. These ranges are approximate and are a starting point only. Always confirm the current fee, and what it covers, with the home.

What you usually get in a senior living home in Pune

Food comes first for most families. Kitchens in Pune usually serve Maharashtrian vegetarian meals: poha or upma in the morning, varan bhaat, bhaji and chapati or bhakri at lunch, and lighter dinners. Many homes cook Jain, diabetic, low-salt and soft diets on request, and a few serve eggs or non-vegetarian food, so ask before you visit.

The weather is kinder than in most Indian cities. Winters are cool, summers are hot from March to May, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, especially in Maval and towards Lonavla. Check that paths are covered and not slippery in the rains, and that the power backup covers lifts.

Expect three meals and tea, housekeeping, laundry, 24-hour security, Wi-Fi and backup power. On the elderly care side, most homes offer daily vitals checks, medicine management, a visiting doctor, physiotherapy and an ambulance tie-up. Care staff usually speak Marathi and Hindi, and in the newer communities English too.

How to choose the right senior living home in Pune

There is no single best old age home in Pune, only the best fit for your parent's health, budget and where the family lives. These checks help.

  • Match the area to the family. Pune traffic is heavy at peak hours, so a home in Baner suits children in Hinjawadi or Aundh, while Kharadi or Wanowrie suits families in the east.
  • Check the nearest hospital and the route. Ask which hospital the ambulance goes to, and time the drive from Maval or Sinhgad Road in the evening rush.
  • Ask about nurses at night. In smaller care homes, find out whether a trained nurse is on site overnight or only on call.
  • For a flat in a community, read the fine print. Check the MahaRERA registration, the possession date, the monthly charges and the resale rules.
  • Visit in the monsoon if you can. Rain shows how well a home handles damp, leaks and covered walkways.
  • Eat a meal there and ask how the kitchen handles soft and diabetic diets.
  • Read the deposit and exit terms before you sign.
